재즈만큼 재미있고, 짜릿하고, 절묘한 음악은 없다고 한다. 그런데 왜 내 귀엔 재즈가 안 들릴까? 소위 ‘명반’을 들어봐도 뭐가 뭔지 모르겠고, 조금 지나면 잠이 온다. 수면제로는 그만한 게 없다. 재즈가 잘 들리지 않는 이유는 기본적으로 “낯설게 하기”가 목적이기 때문이다. 
무엇으로부터 낯설게 한다는 말일까? 원곡으로부터다. 재즈 뮤지션들은 있는 힘을 다해 원곡을 잡아 비튼다. 조를 옮기고, 리듬을 잘게 부수어 엇갈리게 하고, 강약을 바꾸고, 희한한 음색을 내고, 알쏭달쏭한 인트로를 삽입한다. 그런데 우리가 원곡을 아나? 모른다. 원곡을 모르니 잡아 비튼 형상이 얼마나 재미있는지 알 수 없다. 재즈를 들으려면 레퍼토리를 알아야 한다!
이 책에서 재즈 피아니스트이자 평론가 테드 지오이아는 시대를 초월하여 가장 사랑 받는 재즈의 명곡 252곡을 소개한다. 원곡이 수록된 뮤지컬이나 영화, 연주자들에 관한 재미있는 일화는 물론, 스탠더드 레퍼토리가 되기까지의 과정을 생생하게 들려주며 반드시 들어봐야 할 곡들을 추천해 준다. 책을 읽고 유튜브에서 그가 추천한 곡들을 들어보자. 어느새 재즈가 들리는 신기한 경험을 하게 될 것이다!

저자소개

베테랑 재즈 피아니스트이자 평론가, 음악 역사가. “미국 최고의 음악 역사가”로 불린다. 《재즈 스탠더드》, 《재즈의 역사(The History of Jazz)》, 《재즈를 읽다(How to Listen to Jazz)》 등 10여 권의 저서를 썼으며, 그 중 두 권이 《뉴욕타임스》 선정 “올해 주목할 만한 책”으로 선정되었고, 다른 세 권이 미국 작곡가 작가 출판인 협회(ASCAP)에서 선정하는 딤스-테일러 상을 수상했다. 스탠포드 대학 재즈 연구 프로그램의 설립자 중 한 명이며, 최대의 재즈 포털 사이트 재즈 닷컴(www.jazz.com)의 편집장을 역임했다.
